In the pantheon of Afro-Brazilian history, no figure looms larger than Zumbi, the last leader of the Quilombo dos Palmares. While not technically a Capoeirista in the modern sense, he is considered an "honorary capoeirista" and is perhaps the most revered figure in the art's history, symbolizing unyielding resistance against oppression.

Zumbi rose to power within the Quilombo dos Palmares, a massive network of settlements formed by escaped enslaved people in the forests of Alagoas and Pernambuco. Palmares was a sophisticated state; its capital, Macaco, boasted 1,500 homes, blacksmith shops, and a double palisade for defense. Zumbi served as the Sergeant at Arms, training warriors in Angolan fighting techniques and ritual combat. These tactics—which utilized sabotage, ambushes, and fluid retreats—are viewed by many as the roots of Capoeira, particularly the concept of negaça (denying one’s body to the blow of an attacker).
Zumbi’s ascent to the throne was driven by his refusal to compromise. The previous king, Ganga Zumba, had signed a peace treaty with the Portuguese, agreeing to return recently escaped fugitives to slavery in exchange for the safety of the Quilombo. Zumbi rejected this concession, believing that no peace could exist while his people remained enslaved. He led a revolt, allegedly killed Ganga Zumba with poisoned tea, and resumed total war against the colonizers.
The Portuguese eventually contracted the bandeirante Domingos Jorge Velho, who used knowledge of the terrain to finally crush the resistance, Legends regarding Zumbi's death vary; some claim he threw himself from a cliff rather than be captured, while others record that he was beheaded and his head put on display. Today, his legacy survives in countless Capoeira songs, his name is enshrined in the Book of Heroes of the Fatherland, and his memory is honored with a national holiday on November 20th.
